Visit cocktail bar in London

The cocktail bar "Shakespeare's Head - JD Wetherspoon" in London is a typical example of the widespread pub chain J D Wetherspoon, known throughout the UK for its affordable prices and wide selection. However, this location in Holborn stands out due to its historical connection and unique atmosphere compared to other Wetherspoon pubs. The pub's name pays homage to a former, famous inn of the same name that was located nearby on Wych Street, a street that was demolished over 100 years ago. The historic Shakespeare's Head was a meeting place for actors and literary figures such as Charles Dickens, and writer Mark Lemon, who later founded the magazine *Punch*, was a landlord there for a time. This history gives today's pub a cultural depth that goes beyond the usual image of the chain.

Historical pubs in London

The building itself is impressive: it is the Africa House, a former bank building that was converted into a pub in 1998. The architecture features an imposing facade with columns and large windows, giving the pub a traditional yet inviting appearance. Inside, the space is spacious and accommodates a large number of guests, making it particularly popular with students from the nearby London School of Economics as well as tourists and locals. The decor follows the classic Wetherspoon style with a touch of old English "Victoriana" aesthetics, including dark wood, comfortable seating, and a relaxed, informal atmosphere.

Cheap restaurants in Holborn

As for the offerings, Shakespeare's Head is more than just a cocktail bar – it is an all-round pub with an extensive menu available from breakfast to late evening. Breakfast is served until noon, while the main menu remains available until late in the evening. Highlights include traditional British dishes like Fish and Chips, burgers, and baked potatoes, but international options are also represented. Prices are very affordable, as is typical for Wetherspoon, making the pub particularly attractive to budget-conscious guests – an advantage not to be underestimated in an expensive city like London. In addition to food, Shakespeare's Head offers a wide selection of drinks, including freshly ground Lavazza coffee, a variety of real ales, craft beers, and of course, cocktails. The regularly held beer festivals are particularly popular, where guests can sample up to 30 different ales, including international varieties.

Experience Wetherspoon pub atmosphere

The pub is known for its lively atmosphere, which can vary depending on the time of day. Mornings and afternoons are a quiet place for a cheap breakfast or coffee, while evenings and weekends are often very busy – not least because of its central location and proximity to attractions such as the British Museum or Covent Garden. Rugby fans also appreciate Shakespeare's Head, as regular games like the Six Nations Championship are broadcast live here. The size of the pub ensures that despite the high number of visitors, it rarely feels overcrowded, and the staff are often praised for their efficiency, even during peak times.

Best breakfast deals in London

Another aspect that sets Shakespeare's Head apart is its commitment to inclusivity and customer satisfaction, typical of the Wetherspoon philosophy. The pub values creating a welcoming environment for all guests, regardless of background or preferences. Additionally, it offers practical amenities such as the ability to order and pay through an app, speeding up service and making the visit even more convenient. For Mother's Day, there are special offers such as brunch with Prosecco, showing that Shakespeare's Head also focuses on seasonal events to pamper its guests.

What's nice about this, apart of course from the prices, is the ebb and flow of customers. Business early evening, students from the nearby universities later, random groups meeting up throughout. And despite being busy, you can always get served quickly and find seats.

Usually a wetherspoons is a reliable place for a cheap meal. We came here and ordered an american burger and cheese burger. Bread was awful meat was meh. My partner nearly broke a tooth on a bone in the burger. Chips tasted microwaved. The place is quite busy on a saturday afternoon.

Standard Spoons offering, but right in the middle of London. Nice and pleasant people working there too, which is a bonus!

It's not a pub, and not a restaurant. The food is OK, but not special. Good for a quick bite and some beers. Desserts are nice btw, better than expected. The Big mixed grill platter was ok, same for the sirloin steak.

We discovered Shakespeare’s Head while touring Westminster Abbey. One of the curators said Shakespeare’s has a tomb in the abbey, but his body is in Stratford. He mentioned if we’d like to experience the family pub, owned by his brother, Shakespeare’s Head is the place. If you’re looking for a British Pub experience, this pub has high quality Fish and Chips. You can end your meal with a delicious toffee custard or lime tart. They have beverages that accommodate both alcoholic and non alcoholic drinkers. The location is busy in the SOHO shopping area, if you’re looking for pre or post pub purchasing. The building and decor itself has traces of Shakespeare plays, symbols, and history. The price was reasonable for quality and location at £31 per person.

Really lovely pub, great service from the bar team but there is an incredibly aggressive security guard. Swearing, threatening and very intimidating at closing time.
